Seeing An Inspector Calls in Dubai was a great experience and helped my ideas about the play progress. It gave me a lot more knowledge about the setting, the characters and the personalities of said characters.
Seeing the show gives a very different effect than reading the script does due to us being able to hear the tone of the characters voices and seeing their body language change to the occasion. For example, when Eric gets caught out on being the father of Eva Smith’s child, he hangs his head low and slouches, his voice gets deeper and slower and he puts an ashamed tone in his voice to further show his feelings towards what happened.
It was very enjoyable because of the way the actors made us feel like we were there and experiencing their struggles with them, and this effect is created by the actors coming forward towards the audience when saying certain things, for example Arthur Birling at the end.
The set was very well designed and the use of the background made it clear to us what it was like at the time An Inspector Calls was set; it included factories blowing out smoke, many buildings with lights on and an orange sunset, showing us that the family were having a party late at night. All of the actors were excellent due to them being able to say everything with me understanding it clearly, they had very good diction and I think I would have heard them even without the microphones.
Despite the fact that there were only 2 songs sung by the cast, I felt it added a great effect to the show during the blackouts when moving furniture, they harmonised and were in time with each other and I heard no off notes. Costumes were very good, Arthur, Gerald, and Eric were all dressed in black tuxedos with ties, while Sybil and Sheila were dressed in green and blue dresses.
What I love about the show was the contrast that The Inspector had compared to the other characters, he spoke more softly but could shout to gain control of the conversation again. He walked very slowly but with purpose which gave us a little thought that he had a dark side to him.
Overall I thought the show was a very good experience and I recommend it to everyone who is trying to get a better idea of An Inspector Calls.
