Spotlight on a Music Scholar - Ben
Ben has been a student here at BSAK since he was 10 years old in Year 5. He loves being on the stage and made his school production debut in Year 7 when he played Babyface in Bugsy Malone - he has been in every show since, including Billy Elliot and Joseph.
Ben is a stalwart of the Music Department, always volunteering to perform at events such as Unplugged and the Friday Jam; he does a lot of work mentoring the younger music students, runs bands and leads clubs after school. Ben is a GCSE and A level Music student and plans to study music at University next year.
He recently achieved a very strong Merit in his Trinity Rock & Pop Grade 8 Guitar Exam with some gorgeous comments from the examiner - Ben plays with a musical ability to maintain style. His timing is secure and he has a good sense of performance throughout the wide range of his programme.
Well done Ben - The Music Department is really going to miss the dynamic impact you have had and wish you all the best on your new course at university - stay in touch we will be delighted to hear all your musical news!
It was interesting to listen to Ben’s thoughts on his passion for music and how being part of the Music Department has influenced him…
What do you enjoy about music?
I enjoy all aspects of music. Prior to taking GCSE and A level music, I was not aware of the fun that analysis and composition could bring to music, instead of purely performance. However, performing music whether it be for a small audience or for an event such as the Unplugged concerts at school, is always the part I look forward to the most. The adrenaline and excitement it gives me is indescribable.
What difference has being a Scholar made to you?
Being a music scholar at BSAK has allowed me to devote more of my time and efforts to the department, and music in general. It has given me an outlook into being a role model for younger musicians in the school, leading to the development of multiple new bands ranging from years 7 - 11. It has also improved my confidence in music, especially after adopting a more mentoral role within the department. Being a musical scholar has also allowed me to get more involved with the administrative side of music, for example arranging the 2023 Unplugged concert alongside the music staff. An experience I am truly grateful for.
You are coming to the end of your time at BSAK. What musical memories do you have?
Every unplugged concert I have taken part in, from when I was in year 8, all the way until year 12, and now with the arrangement of unplugged 2023. Both secondary concerts which I played at and helped out with stage management wise. Taking part in ADYM 2023 was an amazing experience. Despite being knocked out after round 2, I still found it an enlightening experience and I got to meet some amazing people.
Where do you see yourself taking music in the future when you go to university?
I am pursuing music performance and production at university, hoping to eventually form a committed band and play shows across the UK and eventually around the world. I want to share my love for performing and my ambition with music with as many people as possible.
